How Safe Are Bounce Houses?

Many parents are unaware of the danger their children may be in when playing in some inflatable structures. These inflatable play structures are commonly referred to as “moonwalks” or “bounce houses”.
It is unfortunate, but the state of Florida is one of the only States that does not regulate or require inspection of inflatable play structures. This means that there is no one overseeing the companies that rent these units, nor is there any standard for safety, sanitation or a requirement for liability insurance.
There has recently been a huge increase in the number of companies renting inflatable play structures for children. Although moonwalks are a huge hit for any event with children, it is vital that you be aware that not all companies are created equal. There's a bias in the inflatable community that no one has been talking about. It is the stuff that talk shows and evening news magazines are made of, the kind of publicity none of us wants or can afford. It would give typical American families great pause: the safety of kids on inflatables at private parties is often compromised for price.
"Given the budget constraints and expectations of customers hosting backyard parties and other private events can they be both safe and affordable?"
They answered "YES!" But, it doesn't happen "by accident." Here's how to make backyard parties and other private events as safe as the high end corporate and community sponsored festivities:
1. Having proper supervision. Having a trained attendant on site is a MUST. Running an interactive inflatable without an operator is akin to having a pool full of kids and no lifeguard. In both instances the chance of an incident is very unlikely, but you have to have the supervision all the same. Some rental companies offer attendants at an additional fee, but, a having a responsible adult present at all times will suffice.
2. Insurance. Because liability insurance for inflatables can be pricey, many companies are operating without any form of insurance. The lack of insurance allows these companies to offer low rates on their rentals. However, these companies are sacrificing childrens safety for price. This also means that if there is an injury to your child, you may not receive any compensation even if the injury was caused by the company’s negligence. The rental company should hold at least a $1,000,000 general liability insurance. Many companies will lead you to believe that your home owners insurance will protect you in the event of an accident. However, many home insurance policies do not cover accidents in inflatables. If the event is at a park the rental company must have either the city or county as an additional insured.
3. Safety organization. It is ideal that inflatables be rented from a company that is a member of a reputable inflatable safety organization. These organizations require their members to adhere to strict safety guidelines and require their members to carry liability insurance.
4. Operation procedures. The delivery staff should provide verbal and written instructions to parents explaining proper operating, safety and emergency procedures. The staff that delivers the equipment should be knowledgeable of the unit and be able to answer any questions a parent may have about the use of the inflatable.
5. Inspection and maintenance. The inflatable should be cleaned and sanitized before and after each rental by the rental company. Clean and sanitized inflatables help protect your children from harmful viruses and bacteria and ensure an enjoyable play environment.
6. Securing the inflatables. The inflatable must be properly secured by the rental company with a stake or weight at each and every anchoring point to prevent the unit from tipping over with high winds. Unit must not be used with high wind speeds over 25 MPH. Improper weighting and staking is one of the most common causes of inflatable accidents. Why? It is labor and time intensive. Just remember, without it your inflatable amusement may end up more of a hot air balloon than a play structure.
7. Followed standards. It is important that the rental company follows the standards for proper use and operation of inflatable amusement devices. (ASTM) American Society for Testing and Material has specific rules and regulations for the proper use and operation of inflatable amusement devices. Organizations like (NAARSO) National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials help enforce these rules.
Tampa based company, Amazinflates®️, has become the only party rental company in Florida to be certified by The National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials (NAARSO). Amazinflates®️ founder, Ronnie Rivera, has received certification as a Certified Amusement Ride Inspector with Specialty in Inflatable Units. Amazinflates®️ is also a member of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA), The Association of Inflatable Rental Company Operators (AIRCO) and Safe Inflatable Operators Training Organization (SIOTO). Amazinfaltes®️ also follows the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards.
